Health Focus : Sleep for health reasons

This issue’s focus is on Sleep.

• We need 7 to 8 hours of sleep at night.

• During sleep, we drift between two states, the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep and Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep.

• NREM sleep comprises 75–80% of our total sleep and this is when our body releases chemicals that boost our immune system.

• REM sleep comprises 20–25% of our total sleep and this is when our mind consolidates memories.

• Sleep deprivation can lead to an increased risk of chronic health conditions like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and stroke.
